• Do not cover the top as it may block the draft vent or be exposed to high temperature around the flue.

• Be sure that the air intake (at the bottom near where the pilot light and thermostat are located) is not restricted.

• Do not cover the thermostat.

• Do not allow insulation to come within two inches of the floor, which may prevent blockage of combustion air flow to the burner.

• Fasten the jacket firmly around the water heater.

• Inspect the condition of the jacket periodically for sags or loose tape that can lead to blockage of air intakes.

On all water heaters:

• Ensure the pressure relief valve is free to operate by cutting a hole in the insulating jacket around the valve, leaving an clear inch around the valve with no pieces of fiberglass to interfere with its operation. This is extremely important. Arrange the jacket and the pressure relief valve drain line so that water runs down the outside of the jacket into a bucket or drain.

• Cut a flap in the jacket to access thermostats.

• Don’t cover up the instruction manual or warranty information usually located in a pocket taped to the side of the water heater.

• If the water heater is in a wet area, moisture can get trapped inside of the jacket, resulting in rust. Be sure the insulation does not get wet.
